Before bed, you plug the phone into the bedside cable. That small motion is, quietly, the signal that starts the night scroll.

What changes if the charger leaves the bedroom?

The entry point of the night scroll disappears.

In-bed phone use has a fixed entrance. You charge, so it’s at the bedside. It’s at the bedside, so you touch it before sleep. Suddenly it’s 1 a.m. Try to cut this chain in the middle and it becomes a willpower fight. Cut it at step one, and the system does the work.

Plug the charger into an outlet in the living room or hallway instead. That’s it. Cost: zero. The job takes a minute. If it doesn’t suit you, moving it back takes a minute, so you lose nothing. As a zero-cost experiment, the odds are pretty good.

Will that alone reduce night phone use?

I can’t promise it will. But the design has a line of evidence behind it.

Night phones and morning light have been studied separately. A small preliminary study that limited phone use before bed (He 2020, N=38) reported better sleep, and a public body explains that morning light advances the body clock (MHLW e-Healthnet). Both are small or general, and results vary by person, but together they form the basis for pairing a night block with morning light.

Notice the how of the block. A block by willpower — “I won’t look tonight” — ends the moment your resolve runs out after midnight. A block by charger location stays put no matter how tired your midnight self is. Resolve breaks; the living-room charger doesn’t move.

A phone you carried in that’s low on battery helps too, in a quiet way. Watching the percentage nudges you, slightly, toward not touching it.

What about the morning alarm?

A phone alarm means standing up to stop it — and that actually helps.

Bedside-alarm mornings tend to end with you silencing it in bed and drifting into a second sleep or a notification check. With the charger outside, stopping the alarm means standing and walking. By the time it’s off, you’re already out of bed.

Open the curtains right then and you pick up the other half — the morning light that’s said to help set your body clock. Buying an alarm clock solves the alarm question entirely, but that’s past the zero-cost line. For today, the charger is enough.

Tonight’s step

  1. Unplug the charger and move it out of the bedroom — living room or hallway (one minute).
  2. Before bed, set the phone there, then get in bed. Tomorrow morning, walk over to stop the alarm.
