Midnight. Your thumb moves on its own. Up, up, up again. You can’t even stop on videos that aren’t funny, thinking “why am I like this” while your thumb keeps going.
Here’s the first thing to know: that isn’t proof you’re weak.
Why are short videos so hard to stop?
One idea explains it well: a supernormal stimulus — input concentrated past anything evolution prepared us for.
The term comes from animal behavior. It describes cases where an animal reacts more strongly to an exaggerated fake than to the real thing. Faced with a concentration of stimulus that doesn’t exist in nature, an instinct gets hijacked.
Humans aren’t exempt, the argument goes. The environment our brains evolved in had no device that hands us, every fifteen seconds, only the most interesting moments from the entire world, without end. A short-video feed concentrates novelty, sound, motion, and reward uncertainty to a level nature never produced.
Modern neuroscience is starting to line up with this view. One fMRI study reported that while people watched personalized short videos, the brain’s reward system (the ventral tegmental area) was more active (Su 2021). The old animal-behavior idea of a “hijacked instinct” was, in part, observed as actual brain activity.
Does it stop because your willpower is weak?
The opposite. The stimulus is engineered to be that strong.
The feed isn’t the way it is by accident. Which video makes your thumb pause, and where you drop off, is measured. Enormous data and skilled engineers keep refining it in the direction of longer watching.
So what’s happening under the covers at midnight is a match between one tired person and some of the most concentrated stimulus in human history. Blaming only yourself for the outcome — isn’t the scoring a little off?
The upside of this view isn’t comfort. It changes what you do. If your weakness is the cause, your only move is to become stronger. If the strength of the stimulus is the cause, you can change your distance from it. And distance is something you can change tonight.
How do you fight something you can’t out-intensify?
You don’t fight on intensity. You fight on distance and friction.
You can’t turn down how concentrated the stimulus is. What you can change is the distance to reach it. Whether the app sits one tap away or deep inside a folder. Whether it’s within arm’s reach of your bed or across the room. The stronger the stimulus, the more each bit of entry friction is worth.
Tonight’s step: put twenty centimeters between you and the stimulus
Before bed, do one thing.
- Move your short-video app two folder-levels deep from the home screen (about thirty seconds).
- If you have energy left, move your charger somewhere you can’t reach from bed.
Your thumb moves on its own because the stimulus was built for that. So put one gate in front of it before your thumb arrives. Move the fight out of your willpower and into your room.
