Lights off, into bed. At the bedside, within reach, the phone. You already know what you’ll be doing 30 minutes from now, and you put it in the same spot tonight anyway.
Can putting the phone in another room change the night?
It can. The night is decided by the placement before you get in bed.
Plenty of people think night scrolling is weak will. But the moment the phone is at the bedside, the conditions are already bad. You’re asking the most tired, least clear-headed version of yourself, late at night, to make the “don’t touch it” decision every single night. The design itself is unworkable.
So one proposal: remove the decision and replace it with distance.
Why “distance”?
Because the more friction an action takes, the less it happens.
An unwanted habit gets less likely as the effort to start it rises — behavior design calls this “adding friction.” In fact, inserting one small step before opening an app was reported to lower that app’s launches in a field study (Grüning 2023, N=280). People often cite “about 20 seconds,” but that’s a practical judgment call, not a proven optimum. A phone within arm’s reach is the exact opposite: zero friction. The finger moves before you think.
Put the phone in another room and looking means leaving the bed and walking. That “stand up and walk” becomes a wall of tens of seconds. To a sleepy body at night, the wall is much higher than it looks.
A small preliminary study that limited phone use before bed (He 2020, N=38) reported better sleep, and a public body explains that morning light advances the body clock (MHLW e-Healthnet). The thing to notice: don’t do the night block with a vow. Resolve breaks after midnight. Distance in another room doesn’t break.
If it’s within reach, is any spot the same?
Any within-reach spot is about the same. Reachable ≈ a loss for that night.
You can raise the wall in stages.
- Bedside → far side of the room (the “leave the bed” wall)
- Far side of the room → another room (the “walk” wall)
- Another room, with the charger fixed there too (no reason left to bring it back)
If another room feels like too much tonight, the far side of the room is fine. Just one notch of wall, and some nights end with “not worth getting up for” as you fall asleep. Isn’t that a first win?
Tonight’s step
- Move the phone’s home spot at least three steps from the bed (30 seconds).
- If you use it as an alarm, just check the volume carries from that spot.
